The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the right to challenge certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
